I don't understand why Lichess gave me an automatic loss on this game. My opponent had taken 68 seconds on his previous move and blundered badly. I had some connection trouble and still had plenty of time on my clock when I reconnected however I was given an automatic loss after only 54 seconds.
It's because Lichess has a stupid rule where if you disconnect for ANY reason they assume you just going to run the clock and forfeit you.

Its a garbage policy because it unfairly punishes you for many reasons:
- sometimes you are trying to troubleshoot connection issues real quick
- sometimes you are trying to switch to mobile so you can take your game with you while on the go
- sometimes your browser freezes

It's a garbage policy because it doesn't solve any problems:
- if someone wants to run the clock they could just do so without disconnecting
- people that disconnect without malicious intentions 100% are going to try whatever it takes to reconnect

It's just plain dumb to not give someone the time THAT BOTH PLAYERS AGREED ON AT HE BEGINNING OF THE GAME. Lichess doesn't care though.

It's a rule and this is not stupid. It's a good rule. Troubble connection is not an excuse for lose a game, is part of chess online. Indeed GM DrNykterstein (Magnus Carlsen) lose a Titled Arena for troubble in his internet connetion or mobil phone. And he claim about this? Not!!!! Is only a game! Or a tournament Chess over internet! This change your life if you lose or win? This site is only for fun, not for be a GM and make a history like Karpov or another one. Enjoy and have fun! Life is hard to discuss or be angry for lose a chess game
Ah, sorry. I forgot ask yours: How many games you lose for this reason? One, ten, twenty? I lose more than hundred! Many of times for bad internet connection. Of course, many of this as anonymous. Many times in the other side I had very well opponents, when you could challenge registered chessplayers as anonymous some years ago.
@p-wnattack , your argument is, "It's just plain dumb to not give someone the time THAT BOTH PLAYERS AGREED ON AT HE BEGINNING OF THE GAME." Have you ever thought because you knew BEFORE you started the game that "if you disconnect for ANY reason they assume you just going to run the clock and forfeit you." then according to your argument then lichess has to forfeit you in case you disconnect because that is what you agreed on.
i am just curious. how people want to selectively choose what they agree to.
That's just not true. But if you disconnect for a long time, or close the tab for 15s then your opponent can claim a win. This is to stop people from rage quitting and wasting their opponents time.
@lovlas did you even read my post? I completely debunked everything you just said. The only people this policy hurts are people who are experiencing technical issues on their end. And it hits them hard, like really hard, like crippling the site for them when it would have been usable with small hiccups hard. I am personally affected by this whenever I visit my father or go to my school's campus.

@bluestblue technically true but I could argue on a practical level we shouldn't include that policy in the agreement, but that is a completely different argument than what I'm interested in. What I am trying to discuss is what should the policy be.
Yep. You are wrong. It's something like 90s if you keep the tab open and 15s if you close it.
@p-wnattack, any rule has its drawback. Not having this rule has its own drawback. I can argue that when someone agrees to a 3 minute game over the internet, they are also agreeing to be there for 3 minutes without any "technical issues". why should not they be penalized? It looks like you even know exactly when you are experiencing these issues (school and father premises). If I were you, I will stop playing when you are in those places or play as anonymous when you are there, rather than expecting a community to change the rules. What you did was took your own opinion and used very strong words to sound it as if it is "facts". hopefully you will realize that there are two sides to any argument.
the point is every rule has its own drawbacks, that doesn't make the rule a "garbage" as you put it.
Well, I have a descent internet connection, so luckily I wasn't affected by this yet, but I think lichess should give the disconnecting player at least 3 minutes to come back (on his clock of course) before forfeiting him. or at least assess the evaluation of the position, and if it's like -3 and beyond, only then assume he disconnected on purpose and forfeit him.
