I was just made aware (at lichess.org/forum/general-chess-discussion/time-controls-meaning#6) that Lichess implements per-move-time-increment incorrectly. And when I say incorrectly, I mean not in accordance with FIDE's official chess rules.
On p. 31 of FIDE's official laws of chess (rcc.fide.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/FIDE_Laws-Of_Chess_2018-1.pdf), it says that an increment is an amount of time "added from the start before each move for the player". So you already receive your first increment before your first move.
You can easily witness this when for instance watching the recent World Blitz or Rapid championships. The players always start with 3:02 on their clocks in Blitz respectively 15:10 in Rapid.
It's the same in all other over-the-board tournaments. Accordingly, all chess clocks work that way. (I suppose it may be possible to program a manual mode on clocks that allow for that with an additional 1-move-period at the beginning without increment. But that would be quite a hassle.)
Yet Lichess only starts adding the per-move-bonus for move 2.
Why? What reason could there possibly be for deviating from the chess rules in such a detail, causing unnecessary confusion?
I propose to change this. Please grant any per-move-increment for the first move. As is always the case in over-the-board chess.
I can't help but notice the similarity to this topic: lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/lichess-categorizes-blitz-rapid-and-classical-incorrectly-for-many-time-controls).
Apparently, Lichess likes to offhandedly change FIDE's official chess rules... :-(
Deviating from OTB rules on Lichess is fine if there is a good reason for it! But there doesn't seem to be any good reason in sight in this case...
Or am I missing one?
