On The Forum

I've seen quite a few people using threads as a form of personal chat over the past few weeks. I'd like to point out that, unless the thread is specifically intended for use as a chat, the forum is not for personal conversations. If you are not addressing the whole community, and if the content of your post does not contribute to the content of the thread, you should not post it in the forums. Instead, you should use the direct message feature.

Why does this matter?
First, hijacking the thread is rude to the users who are using the thread correctly, as they now have to wade through the unrelated comments.

Second, it's rude to the creator of the thread, who will be less likely to get relevant feedback on the topic.

Third, it bumps the thread, which can kill the thread entirely once it reaches 50 posts.

In conclusion, if you find that your post is more of a personal conversation with another user than something that you want the whole lichess community to see, please use the DM feature.
On the other hand, it's not like this place is exactly Grand Central Station. And I notice that there have been a lot of Discouraging Words being voiced lately at the same time that people are complaining (as usual) about the generally moribund state of the forums. So maybe not quite so many Traffic Cops and Categorical Imperatives in the future...
@MrPushwood I’m not referring to related conversations between all the contributors of a thread. I’m talking about idle small talk between two or three users that is being posted in active threads.

I’m not trying to police, I just think some people are unaware of basic forum nettiquette, and am trying to rectify this.
The user of the forums are small children and adults. Factors like innocense, anonymity and trolling contribute to the seriousity of the flow of the communication in the forums. I don't think these can be avoided. But we do share the same interest and that is the pleasure to be connected.
