I lost a game due to this, and it showed my opponent's timer counting down, but said I resigned. Do we get elo refunds?
you do not unless if you lose someone who violates the lichess terms of service.
Does anyone know why this happened and if there is anyway of knowing in advance ?
It should show a countdown bar in the side of the screen from about 10 minutes before it will restart, so you have a bit of time to wrap things up. It restarts periodically, I assume to give Lichess new updates and so on. I think it usually does it every day or something, but I'm not used to it doing it this time of day.
