I guess they pretty much would imagine the post-WWI world that really happened. Perhaps with the difference that Russia took over large parts of eastern Europe.

They would assume that the French would come to dominate the European mainland, as Napoleon came close to doing one hundred years earlier. As a result, everyone would play e6 in response to e4, and nobody would play the Berlin and there would be a statue of Philidor where the Brandenburg Gate currently stands. Mais oui!!
