Quote in playing area

> This is the year 2022. It is generally accepted in English that "man" is no longer used to mean everyone. In the modern era, we say "humanity", "people", or "mankind" at a push. It's an even longer stretch to make "A man" mean "a woman".

> This quote relies on the old idea that a man's family were his "chattel" or property, to be categorised alongside his wealth and books. Otherwise, I agree that it's a pompous and meaningless quote.

> Everyone here would like to see more women playing chess, in order to have a more even gender balance, right? Unless I'm wrong, and guys here would overtly prefer chess to remain 95%+ male, then I think there's something to be said for listening to female plays when they say something is offputting to women.

How is saying the word "man" (which as a term has been around for a while - and not just in chess) sexist? You're not referring to males. You're just referring to humankind. I think this is a very unimportant detail that is not worth debating. However, I do see how this quote is "whiny".
In which case, I'm sure you would find it unimportant to be referred to as an air stewardess or badmaid, if you were working one of those jobs.

Women are not men: when someone says "a man", we all have a mental image which is different to if someone says "a woman" or "a person". Studies have shown that women feel a statement doesn't apply to them as much when that language is used, versus gender neutral language. Anecdotally, that's what female chess players are saying too, including in this thread.

Some of the quotes are a bit inappropriate, I think. I have created tournaments for kids only to find a quote that I really don't want young kids to read. In that case I have to cancel the tournament I just created, create another one, and hope for the best.

I do like the quote feature, but it would be great if a tournament creator could have a bit of control over what quote is shown.
