Most Overrated Films in IMDB Top 250?

GF1 + GF2, what to say that hasn't been already? These films alone are 10% of my inspiration as an artistic person. Now, I'll turn off some folks, GF3 is appropriately not in the 250. It is however quite good, its value to me is adding well to the canon, I agree with whats been said before, Santino combines aspects of Michael, Sonny and Fredo. I liked 90% of the casting in GF3.
@clousems I do like Hugo, I think it has fantastic visuals, a great soundstrack, and the Grace-Moretz and Butterfield are nice (no wonder their fame rose quickly afterwards). Indeed, it is also a great hommage to Pierre Melies and his groundbreaking achievements (too bad so many of his films were lost, at least we have "Voyage to the Moon" I guess). It was a nice change for Scorcese too, who, to everyone's knowledge, likes to do his movies about gangsters rather than kids in a fantastic world!

I do not know whether it deserves to be in the top 250 of all time, maybe, but that is certainly a movie I'd recommend people to watch.
Shawshank Redemption is the most overrated movie of all time, its not terrible, but the greatest movie in history? pffft, get outta here
It's good to see a Hindi film "3 Idiots" on number 80.
It's a great film which can be in the top 50.

Agree. Batman Begins is a great movie, one of my favourites from the DC Comics.
The funny thing about movies from DC Comics is that their movies about bad guys are better than the heroes, like Suicide Squad and Joker.

The original Spiderman trilogy is amazing, but I don't think any installments of X-Men are that great.
I myself didn't much like the Beauty and the Beast, but I did love Ratatouille. But, I think it isn't on that list, is it??

I don't understand why people hate Avengers: Endgame due to the special effects. Can't you respect the great work of those people?
Some of the Marvel Movies cannot be on that list, but I would have liked to see movies like Black Panther and Iron Man in there.
Into the Spider-Verse is clearly overrated there, it should be near the bottom of that list.

Terminator 2 can be replaced by Terminator: Dark Fate on that list. It would be fine then.
@S_TANISH
I take issue with the Marvel films being on the list not because I thought they were poorly done, but rather because they have little to no artistic merit. Perhaps Guardians of the Galaxy would truly merit a spot at the tail end due to the ridiculously good visual effects, but I don't see any other Marvel movie being legitimitely great. They suffer from predictible, repetitive plots; corny gags; subpar acting performances (with some notable exceptions); and, most importantly, they lack a true purpose other than to make money. Now, I know that most films are made to make money, but the truly good films are made because the filmmakers have something they want to show to the audience.
This sense of purpose, not the production value, is what truly distinguishes a movie.
Consider this: Night of the Living Dead had $114,000 budget. Justice League had a $300 million budget. Which has gone down as the better film?
12 Angry Men, wonderful movie, the jury composition is out of touch in 2021.
12 Angry Men has been recreated enough times to address that concern, however tongue in cheek. While on the topic of courtroom settings though, My Cousin Vinny is a worthy inclusion to the 250 list
Probably seen like 30% of the top 250, so can't account for all the movies but i do have gripes with following:

1. Lord of the rings - what's was all the fuss about? Overlong, overbored, i mean, it's not a production-wise bad trilogy, but definitely overrated.
2. Forrest Gump - grating to watch to be honest, although maybe it's a Tom Hanks thing, since few of his movies are my cup of tea in general. Jenny doesn't do it for me either
3. Interstellar - I mean, i like sci-fi in general, just not this one. Did like the concept where time was faster though
4. Django Unchained - I'm a big fan of Tarantino, but i do wonder if he didn't burn out actually already during the Bruce Willis act of Pulp Fiction. Django was too bleak and none of the characters did it for me
5. The Heat - The diner scene, man, this is such a joke. I was so dissapointed where all the build up led to this lame ass dialogue. Actually, do think the "original" movie (Thief) should take Heat's place in the top 250.
6. Three billboards... - i mean, tis not bad, just not top 250 good
7. Mad max fury road - This is probably most mistifying entry on the list. Is it the visuals, which i thought were nothing special? Can't be the story, the original 3 movies were infinitely more interesting
That list is an abomination that made me sick ... #8 and #9 for instance. Tarantino and Leone, though entertaining should nowhere to be found in top 200. LOTR does not even belong in top 1000. All Spielberg’ are overrated. Interstellar is a giant system error. When movies like Pulp Fiction get better rating than , say, any Chaplin, you start dreaming of mass genocide.

Wait, Léon #31 ? I need meds. That movie ruined a date I had with a cutie who hated me for inflicting her such pain.

Intouchables, #44 ? there is a gazillion french movies better than this. Bullet in the head = relief. An old recipe of my beloved David Lynch.
Recency bias is a big problem with the list, I would guess largely a product of paid priming. On the flip side, there are too many films from antiquity on there. Between the black and white composition, sluggish pacing and limited range of expression, I don't see them standing up objectively in large numbers (and being influential alone is not enough). Some of the lauded ones that I've seen, such as Frankenstein, the old Scarface and North by Northwest are honestly mediocre IMO.

Genres such as comedy (which to be fair doesn't translate the most easily across borders) are also marginalized.

In terms of output, cinema crested around the 90's with a steady supply of illustrious films across all genres. Contemporary mainstream cinema is mostly shallow (but if anyone has a good recommendation, I'd be interested to know).
