Growing abuse of adding time to opponent

How is it that during rated games you are allowed to give your opponent extra time? Why is accepting extra time or not an option in settings? It only invites very unsportmanlike behavior. Never once have i had a winning position when an opponent added time on my clock. Way to many users are now abusing this option to annoy their opponent and show superiority in winning positions.
I get why it was introduced, but if this isnt made optionable in settings even during rated games, im playing elsewhere.
I don't see anything unsportsmanlike about giving your opponent extra time at any point in the game. Usually when I give extra time, its because the position is interesting and I am far ahead on time, (e.g. 5 minutes vs 30 seconds) so I add time allowing them to keep playing the game rather than simply flag them. Sometimes an opponent is stalling for a very, very long time in a lost position (unsportsmanlike behavior) and the winning player might sarcastically add time to encourage resignation. This is still far more polite then hurling abuse at your opponent through the chat room, don't you think?

Personally, when I am in an absolutely lost position with no chance of winning or drawing, I press the resign button.
"This is still far more polite then hurling abuse at your opponent through the chat room, don't you think?"

Absolutely. And if it's unsportsmanlike to add time when someone is losing, why are they continuing to play in the first place?
#1 If you play in a tournament or simultaneous exhibition, your opponent cannot add time to your clock.
It happened to me too a couple of times, that my opponent before their last (mating) move started adding time to my clock, even minutes. In these cases I let my time run out. I think this treatment makes them think twice to bugger you about..
I think you're totally right Subaya.

I usually resign when my opponent starts giving seconds for free. For me, it is his way to say: "I am so superiour, now let me play with you like the cat with the mouse." or "You are not able to win on a regular basis anyway."

I think that extra time button should not exist.
Its just a perceived humiliating aspect of the game for too many players from what i can conclude. I still havent read one single decent comment explaining why it isnt optional in settings, but forced unto all played games not part of a tournament. A lot of players (like me) simply dont have time or wish to be part of regular tournaments but prefer to play shorter time intervals. Should this really be punished by a ridiculous in theory unending (+ 15 sec - infinity) option to unsettle opponents?
Adding time to your opponents clock as a answer to them adding time to yours, or not responding and letting time run out if they add time is a very unsatisfying answer, many of us simply dont like our precious time to be wasted that way. I want to just play chess sometimes (when i finally have time), not waste time on psychological rubbish.
The best solution to this behavior is to beat them.
And if you know you can't win, then resign. Don't waste time for both of you.
I don't really understand why are you offended. You can resign or abandon the game and switch to your next one. Although the formal is very unsportsmanlike conduct, imho. Does the result LOST ON TIME makes your game to look better than RESIGNED, do you think?

An opponent who doesn't make a move (bad or good or resign) and lets himself timed out is the real annoying thing to me. But I admit, I play correspondence games almost exclusively where the sense of time is very different to the speed chess games.
