Why are 5 + 5 games labelled "classical" time control on lichess?

@teerdurchzogen I think you explained the popularity of 7+0 correctly as the slowest time control under lichess blitz. That would also explain the relative popularity of 2+1 as the slowest time control counting as bullet. It may also be that 7+0 is a compromise between people who find 10+0 too slow and 5+0 too fast. The surprising non-popularity of 5+0 may be because some prefer 3+2.

A 3 h tournament of 15+15 looks feasible. Even a 7 h tournament of 30+30 must be doable: after all people sign up for the 24 h marathon of 3+0.

Indeed, you can only generate tournaments of 2 h maximal duration and 7+2 maximum time control. However, in the lobby you can custom seek games at any time control up to 180+180. If you have trouble finding a match it may be a sign of no interest.

I see your point of the league system. Why do not you launch an appeal in the general chess discussion forum for say a 7 round tournament round robin all play all of say 30+30 on 7 consecutive days of the week from say 20h00 GMT to about 22h00 GMT? Or of 7 consecutive Fridays from 20h00 to about 22h00? When the first 8 participants have enrolled, you can post pairings for the 7 rounds.
Before I start my own league I will first try the existing ones like the Lone Wolf with 30+30 and the Lichess4545 League (still I think it would be nice if this would become official Lichess stuff with a trophy like for the marathons and full automatic registration et cetera), still it's a nice idea I'll bear in mind.
I just think 30+30 as a classical time control would have a bright future with a new rapid category for games lasting longer than 15 minutes per player but less than an hour. That's all, the rest is up to the lichess staff. I hope they recognize the efforts that have already been made by some players (I think about the poll). Lichess could even initiate an own poll where they could present an eloborated concept for longer time controls plus tournaments and leagues and ask, if the community would like these changes to be implemented.
Well for now I will concentrate again on my own playing, not on lichess policy; I want to join at least the 30+30 Lone Wolf League; offline I plan to attend a chess club as soon as I moved.
Regarding this thread it's maybe even an achievement we have not talked about cheating all the time as usual when it comes to longer time controls. In fact I have never faced cheating (as far as I can tell, I analyze every single game) against me in hundreds of games. As the original poster said: Cheating doesn't seem more prevalent in classical time controls. There must be other reasons for a lower popularity. Especially if one keeps in mind, that most good players tell lower rated players to play long time controls to improve. But then u1500 classical tournaments with 10 minutes. That's just not accurate; 15+15 tournament would be a major improvement for all low(er) rated players and I do consider myself such a player as well.
Have a nice day, I spend too much time writing :D
There is no doubt that public tournament design (which are offerred, when, how often, etc.) and promotion such as blogs can promote and popularize different ways of playing chess on lichess. We've seen this with variants and it's reasonable to assume this can and does work on time controls as well.

Time controls with a quick search button and with tournaments clearly are getting a boost.

A less obvious boost is given to desired extremes to play on the edges of each rating. If you want to focus on blitz rating, you may want the longest possible blitz game with no increment. Or you may want the shortest possible game (increment only). There are a number of different ideas you can have here, but the most popular idea(s) plus the boundaries of a time control will result in popular time controls as well. The boundaries (indirectly) plus the most common ideas will define boosted time controls as well.

The above explains why 7+0 is 3rd most popular as was pointed out. It's the longest no inc blitz.

Just because there are these alternate ways for time controls to get a boost, that does not imply that public tournament offerrings and quick search buttons have no effect, which would be a ridiculous position. Clearly, all three factors contribute to the popularity of time controls, and there indeed is a chicken and an egg effect. Does anyone here really want to take the position that having constant 30 + 30 tournaments, or a 30+ 30 button, for the next 5 years, would have no impact no the popularity of 30 + 30? How about if we took away a couple other options?

So yeah, tournaments, quick search button, and the boundaries of ea. rating pool ALL are important in the present and FUTURE popularity of different time controls. I think we can agree on that.
