Make Forum Visible Again!

In the past, on the homepage of Lichess, there used to be a board with the latest responses to recent threads of the forum. I am not aware on what ground, but this board has been removed and I don't see but downsides to this decision.

First of all, now it is much more improbable that a guest discovers the forum. As a matter of fact, even myself, I had forgotten the existence of the Lichess forum for years, and only because now I wanted to post something I was reminded of its existence. Therefore, with the current set-up new members don't realize its existence unless they actively look for it or explore the communit tab.

In addition, even if someone is aware of the existence of the forum they won't interact with it unless they look for it. The advantage of having that board in the homepage is that it makes it visible even to people that don't look for it, but might be interested in participating in specific threads if they get aware of their existence. As a matter of fact, myself would never look for the forum, but I noticing some intriguing threads on that board I would jump in from time to time.

In other words, I would expect that having a board with the latest responses to forum threads on the homepage of Lichess would not only liven up the forum but also the users experiences on the website. The users would get to interact more with the community and would engage more with it.

On the other had I don't see any downside to it. The board doesn't need to be on the top of the page. Just somewhere below the blogs should be ok.

What do people think?
I have to admit that when I posted this thread I had not realized myself the importance of this suggestion! But the more I engage with the forum the more I get the impression that there is only a relatively small and closed group of people who ever check it. And, from personal experience (as explained in my first post), I suspect that the main reason is that most people just never come across the forum.

So, I think that bringing back the forum board on the homepage will have an immediate and big impact on opening up the forum to more people.

This is page for chess players, playing chess instead of posting chess.

That's a great example of a self-contradiction but this is not the right thread for this! You need to open a new thread in the off-topic discussion section of the forum which, paradoxically, Lichess provides even for chess players!

It would be interesting to hear from lichess staff about this. Why was the forum board removed from the homepage of lichess in the first place? And is there any data about the impact of this removal in forum participation? For example did the forum thread replies per online users remain the same after the removal? Did the number of new threads per online users remain the same?

I think these stats could give some insight on how much impact the forum board on the homepage could have.
I guess you could have something that displays the most recent 4-5 forum posts so that people are able to see recent forum messages in a convenient location and this actually could allow for more participation in the forums. I don't see why not in this case when they already have puzzles, tournaments, games, official blogs, and broadcasts.

The old forum board was just seeing if your friends (back then, followers) posted to a forum or followed a person, etc, which didn't make sense, but having a small forum board that shows the most recent posts, perhaps the most recent one in each forum category could actually help with forum engagement

I had not noticed the "friends" board that you mention. Probably because I don't have friends! But I am pretty sure that, in the past, they had a forum board on the homepage precisely as you describe: it displayed the 5 most recent replies to not very old threads! Probably, it was before you join this website. I have no idea when they removed it. The only thing I noticed recently is that I hadn't interacted with the forum in years and only then I realized that they had removed the forum board. Apparently, the only reason I visited the forum back then was precisely that board.

I used the wayback machine and looked at the lichess website on February 2, 2014 (I made my account in late 2019 and I don't think the forum board you described existed at thay point)
The website did actually did have a forum board that contained recent forum posts, exactly as you described. And I still think it's a great idea if that feature could come back

Thanks for verifying this!
I have to admit that I was not aware of the wayback machine! That's quite useful!
The problem is that notifying all users of a few very recent forum posts was essentially the same as an enormous "HEY VISIT THE FORUMS!" button in terms of relevant info. If you read forums, the timeline is the way to stay informed.

But now, a moment of silence for all the users who never became forum nerds because the ad is gone.
