As an active player on the leaderboard for the racing kings variant, there are many things people take advantage of.
A few years ago, Almost none of the accounts that were in the top 10 cheated, or took advantage of certain rules, and as a result, are much lower in the leaderboard now. People now don't work hard to get to the leaderboard. This is because of multiple reasons. Back then, people would play other players around their own strength. Now, People play mostly provisional people, and play a minimum of 1 game a week, which is the minimum To maintain a position in the leaderboard.
Another thing people do is constantly create new accounts, and play until they're not provisional. Since they play other provisional people, by the time they're not provisional, their ratings are fairly high, when in reality their strength is much lower.
Just 4 days ago, someone who already has an account in the top 10 (I don't want to mention names) created another account, and has that account in the top 50.
People also play like 20 or 30 games and then they've reached the top 10, so they see no reason to play any more games.
Some people play correspondence, and so they get almost perfect if not perfect games, and when we report them they don't get taken into consideration. Not only are they just playing correspondence, but when they do, they play people about 500 or 600 points lower than them.
Here are some features that would prevent this:
1. A minimum of games played to be on the leaderboard, instead of just not being provisional. This minimum number would be somewhere around 150
2. More games to be played to maintain a position on the leaderboard, like 15 or so. This would eliminate about half of the top 10, as most of them rarely play.
3. A minimum number of days on lichess, to prevent people from getting onto the leaderboard the same day they create their account. A minimum of 7 days or so would be good.
4. A feature where you maintain your position on the leaderboard by playing people similar to your rating.
5. Playing games that are not just correspondence, but real time controls, like 0+1, 1/2+0, 3+0, 3+2, etc.
6. A way to stop people from getting multiple accounts of theirs onto the leaderboard. I think this feature will be hard, but this is something many people take advantage of.
I know a lot of the honest players of the racing kings community would agree with me here. I have seen a lot of recent posts that try to bring attention to this problem. This is not just affecting the racing kings community now, and other variants are also becoming affected.
