About me

Hi! My name is Advait Patel. I am a 21-year-old IM with 2 GM norms. I am currently a Computer Science student at the University of Toronto.

Playing experience

My greatest accomplishments in my chess career are:

1) 1st place in UTD Fall FIDE Open ahead of several 2600s and netting a GM norm with 1 round to spare.

2) 2nd place in the US Junior Closed Championship www.uschesschamps.com/2018-us-junior-championships/pairings-results-junior

3) 2599 rating performance in the US Masters. This was my final IM norm and I barely missed out on a GM norm (2600 performance needed).

4) 1st place in the North American U20 Championship with 8/9 to earn a GM norm. chess-results.com/tnr297814.aspx?lan=31&art=4

Teaching experience

I started teaching chess 9 years ago to help my first student achieve top 10 in the World Youth Chess Championship U8. Since then, I have taught many students of various rating ranges, and committed students increased their rating by several hundred points in 1 year. I specialize in teaching juniors, however I have worked with adult improvers as well and am open to all inquiries!

I have also helped some of my 2200+ FIDE friends with deep opening preparation for their tournaments.

Other experiences

For the past 4 years, I have also been teaching chess in schools and tutoring academies.

Best skills

I am very good at pinpointing weaknesses in my students' play, breaking down concepts in the position, and explaining the psychological aspect of planning/calculation. I am also easy-going and patient which can be motivating for students.

As for my own play, I am a dynamic player that enjoys playing both tactically and positionally.

Teaching methodology

We will spend the first couple of sessions analyzing your games and work on exercises to understand you as a chess player. Once I have a good understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, I will design a custom training plan. I believe it is essential to enjoy the process of studying chess, so the training plan will match your ambitions and life circumstances. Afterwards, we will work in each phase of the game, as it is very important to be a well-rounded player, and also focus on specific areas as needed.

I will always be available to answer questions and am happy to support you during tournaments!
