About me

I fell in love with chess at the age of 11. Even though I was knocked out of my first tournament in the first round, the passion remained and I eventually traveled the path from chess beginner to National Champion of Brazil.

I have visited 42 countries and speak 4 languages. I love to study and learn. I have worked in executive positions leading high achievement teams. I am currently developing learning products (such as books and online courses) and coaching people and teams with the goal of helping them achieve their dreams and aspirations.

Playing experience

I was born in Brazil, and at the time international tournaments were very, very rare. At 17 I visited the US for the first time, achieving the US Master title in my first attempt, and Senior Master the following year.

I became National Champion of Brazil in 1983, after being the runner-up twice, in very tight races.

I enjoyed playing for teams, and some of my most cherished memories are from playing in three Under-23 World Championships and one Olympiad, alongside World Champions Tal, Karpov and Kasparov.

Teaching experience

Here´s what some of my students had to say:

...”You are really in your element when you are coaching chess. You give me the feeling that I could be a chessmaster one day. You know...which is probably not going to be the case. But you coach as if that is what you are preparing the person for, which is really cool.
And your stories...the stories you told me about seeing Kasparov play ...and this kind of thing...are priceless.”
(Sean McCallister)

"Dearest Marcos, I am writing to you simply to thank you for the lessons you gave me many years ago. I am a professor of chemical engineering at UFRJ, where I have supervised more than 90 masters and doctoral students. I thank God and Chess for much of what I am today. Without a doubt, you were a very important reference for me. Thank you very much!! "
(Donato Aranda)

Other experiences

After achieving my goal, the IM title, I left competitive chess. The skills I learned were invaluable in enabling me to launch a career in the financial markets, eventually becoming a portfolio manager for banks and pension funds – trading in stocks, bonds and currencies.

A few years ago I fulfilled another one of my lifetime goals, receiving an undergraduate certificate in Marketing Management from Harvard University. I also devoted myself to learning Psychology, studying with great masters about NLP and Hypnosis, techniques that can be very useful in the context of life coaching.

In order to develop physical and mental skills, I practiced the martial arts of Aikido and Japanese Swordsmanship as a hobby.

Best skills

I have traveled the path from chess beginner to National Champion. As your coach, I will be your guide and ally so that your full chess potential may bloom.

Teaching methodology

Know thyself: that is a good place to start. Since classes will be customized for you, I would like to know about yourself and some of your games. From there we will be able to learn about your strengths and areas where improvement is possible. I love to analyze games from the great champions, and we will go over some chess masterpieces to illustrate concepts and strategical and tactical themes.
