Rules For Playing Blitz Correctly: How To Win a Titled Player

Learn how to play Blitz with easy tips from Hikara Nakamura!

1. Never give up.

Never give up, this is very important! First, even if you have a lost position, sit until checkmate (your opponent may blunder, and then the game will turn in your favor!) or your opponent may simply run out of time, and this will be your victory. Let's take my game as an example:

On the 24th move I lost a piece, but noticed that my opponent had 36 seconds (and the time control was 3+0), and decided to play to the end, because I knew that my opponent could run out of time. So here it is! :)

2. Don't premove unless there are no alternatives.

3. Don't focus at time.

No, no, this advice is not about forgetting about the time completely, watch it (it’s even necessary!), but don’t get distracted every 5 seconds, because you won’t focus on the position and you will make wrong decisions, which can lead to defeat.

4. Spend time wisely.

If there are less than 30 seconds left, then you can’t think about a move for more than 2-3 seconds (except when you consider a forced checkmate or a tactic that leads you to an instant win.)
Example:

5. Play only those openings and schemes that you are SURE!

I think there is no need to comment here. Just play chess ^-^

6. Constantly pose problems, throw tactics, attack.

Your opponent will waste time on them.

7. Know when to stop.

if you only win on time and get bad positions 70-80% of the time, it's better to take a break. In order not to lose a lot of rating and give your head a rest from the device and, in principle, from chess. Read a book, go for a walk, sleep. This is useful!
