TO ME

Oldest person To Win GM Title!

ChessChess Personalities
Many players become grandmasters when they're young. Unlike one man who became a grandmaster in his retirement stage!

Grandmaster Yuri Shabanov started playing tournament chess when he was about 27 years old. That's when grandmasters continue their path by studying openings and new variations. Yuri became a strong player in his 30-40's. Yuri finally became a grandmaster after putting in a lot of hard work at 66 in 2003! Damn, he has a lot of passion for chess. My question to Yuri would be why he started late.

About Yuri's Career

Yuri was a Soviet and Russian grandmaster and arbiter. He was also a two-time world senior champion and three-time European champion in the team of Russian seniors. Three-time Moscow senior chess champion. Russian senior chess champion. Unfortunately about seven years after becoming a grandmaster in 2003 Yuri passed away on March 30, 2010.

Congratulations on breaking the chess record of the oldest person to become a grandmaster. The entire chess world will appreciate your very hard work and dedication to being a member of the chess society.

Thanks
