Some sound openings are Scotch Game, Ruy Lopez, Petroffs's defense, Sicilian Defense, etc. Sicilian Defense happens when white plays E4 and black responds with a move called C5. This seems like a sound opening for black. The scotch game happens when white plays E4 and black responds with a good move called E5. Then white plays the move called d4 and experts call it a good but not very sound move. Petroff's Defense happens when white plays E4 and then Black plays E5. Then white attacks the E5 pawn by Nf3 and black counterattacks with Nf6 and white has to decide. Ruy Lopez happens when White plays e4 and black plays e5. Then white attacks e5 and black defend with Nc6.
