Two NEW Tournaments that could change Lichess
Swiss and Arena are great! What about these? We've had Swiss and Arena tournaments for a long time now. It would be nice to see a new addition to the chess website, and boy, have I got a few ideas for it!
League Tournament
Minimum number of players: 5
- No fixed amount of matches/rounds. This is an Arena-based tournament
- When Group timer runs out, the top 4 qualify for semi-finals
- In case of draw in the knockout rounds, an Armageddon* match is held
- The winners of the semi-finals qualify for the Grand Finale
- The losers of the semi-finals go against each other in the Third Place match.
It would be fun to see this implemented in Lichess.
Knockout Tournament
Minimum number of players: 4 (4, 8, 16, 32)
- Swiss-based tournament
- Consists of knockout matches: Semi-Finals, Quarter-Finals, Round of 16, Round of 32
- In case of draw in any match, an Armageddon match will be held
- Each game can consist of different legs.
- The tournament organizer can organize different people into groups, for example, if there are 32 players, the players can be organized into 8 groups (4 players per group).
- Each group must have a minimum even number of 4.
- Groups are completely optional. A group can even consist of 8 players, or even 16. In each case, the top 50% of the group will qualify to the knockout stages.
- Winner of semi-finals qualify to the Grand Finale
- Losers of semi-finals go against each other in the Third Place match.
This would be an interesting addition to Lichess too.
* An Armageddon match is a match where White has more time than Black, but White has to win to win. Black wins if the game is tied or Black wins.
I haven't thought of this 100% through, so feel free to comment your suggestions and problems in the forum!
