The Day I Played In The Argentine Championship

ChessOver the boardTournament
Way back when there was a periodical called the Players Chess News. And thanks to its pages, I once spent a full round playing in a different hemisphere. :)

PCN was published by a guy in Seattle, and a friend of mine became one of the editors there.

Soon enough he decided it was time for a prank. He told me to pick out a game from my archives, and so I went with a sprightly little gamelet (okay, I gotta stop reading this stuff!) against a guy named Cheng.

Anyway, that issue came out and I got my copy. And there my old game was in print--with a diagram, no less! Another chapter from my longtime rivalry against fellow porteno, Cuervas (I told my friend he should've gone ahead and made it Cuervo, but he said he didn't want to be quite so obvious about it). :D

And yeah, I doubt very much that Najdorf or Panno could feel me breathing down their necks (mine was just a game from some local tournament). For a long time afterwards though I kept expecting somebody to come up to me at a tourney and say: "Hey, aren't you from Argentina or something?" :)
