My Fischer vs Petrosian FOUR QUEENS game sent the Youtube algorithm crazy

ChessAnalysisChess PersonalitiesStrategyTactics
This game and my analysis accidentally drove the Youtube algorithm insane for all the wrong reasons!

Hi all

In my fascination with both Bobby Fischer and Tigran Petrosian, I may have "over-analysed" slightly the following game a few years ago:

https://lichess.org/study/tIn1hQLj/vbO48vTD#73

I seemingly kept getting grief and moans every few days about the analysis being too long. I wasn't sure what to say about it - perhaps today I would recommend playing it at double speed.
If there was music to express the analysis, I think I would choose this one

"Killing me Softly... with this analysis...."

https://youtu.be/oKOtzIo-uYw

The moaning, whining, and general complaining became more frequent!

Anyway, it seems the Youtube algorithm was taking this drawn game and presenting it to the masses because of all the comments. The algorithm didn't quite recognise the comments were moans, complaints, and general whining about my over-lengthy analysis! I had created by accident, the chess analysis equivalent of

"Killing me softly with chess variations"

If I had to write a poem expressing the sentiments, maybe this would come to mind:

A poem by Kingscruher about overkill Youtube chess analysis

"
Please Kingscrusher just stick to the main game
All your analysis is just lame

Why is this game just a draw?
Isn't that just a bore?

All this analysis and I just want to see the game
Not all the variations that never came.....

Please please can't you just stick to the really mundane
You expect most Youtube viewers to have an analysis-hungry brain .....
"

Anyway, the video comments seemed to create a "vicious spiral". I look back on this and think this is quite amusing now - at least worth a blog post! The more comments the video got, the more it was shown by the Youtube algorithm - and yes even more complaints, moans, and general whining. Which as you guess created even more exposure and even more... Yep, you got it. The video so far has gone over 1 million views.

Here is the analysis video (please play at double speed!) - Yes, it is too much analysis. I accept that now :) Yes, I know Youtube videos should generally be about cats doing silly things, or people who look as cute as cats, and somehow funny, entertaining, silly, etc.

The game actually has a kind of "twin" which is decisive here:

which i did cover here:

Takeaway points

  • The game did have an exciting element - four queens did appear
  • The game did end in a DRAW - and generally, nowadays I steer away from covering drawn games
  • You can excite the algorithm on Youtube for all the wrong reasons
  • There is hope for spicing up in Social media even Tigran Petrosian drawn games - just use clickbait titles, thumbnail, and excessive analysis of variations!
  • Generally, I like doing chess courses nowadays, so I am not so sure I am that keen to try and manipulate algorithms. Delivering actual value to myself or an audience is more important in my view.

Hope you enjoyed this blog :). Any likes and follows are really appreciated. Also, I also have some interesting chess courses at https://kingscrusher.tv/chesscourses to check out.
