Patience & Cool head is the Key

“I don’t believe in psychology. I believe in good moves.” – Bobby Fischer

Patience and keeping a cool head are very important in the game of chess. On that, I have observed two types of approach from two different categories such as "Novice player" and "Advanced player".

Novice player ~ they know how to move the pieces across the board and checkmate wins the game that's it! you can't describe them anymore! So it is normal for them to be impatient. Hence we can't blame them rather we can try to understand their physiology. Let's see,

  • All the time they intended to play fast chess
  • They are unable to differentiate between a high priced piece and a low priced piece. So often that's leads loss of material
  • They randomly move their pieces over the board.
  • They always think about their clock rather than the position on the board
  • They always want to give checks!
  • They are very obsessed with winning or losing
  • Sometimes they did checkmate by accident without noticing it! and so on

Advanced player ~ Well, they are clearly aware of the basic fundamental and know what they should do to get rid of the impatient mind and try to calm down but still they fall into it,

  • Many of them wanted to play chess very quickly, where their accuracy level get reduced
  • Sometimes they think excessively in a certain position and time is of the essence and begins to be impatient
  • They prepare something for certain things such as opening novelty, etc but when they can't execute it properly they lose their coolness while playing for that reason.
  • As the game gets longer, they will lose their temper when they reach their limit.
  • During a game when they feel they are in a good position (e.g. development, material advantage, time advantage, etc.) but can't perform properly and the benefits seem to be fading, they lose their temper.
  • Excessive aggression is really a bad habit, and leads to impatience. Advanced players often do this and lost their patience level.
  • Rating imbalance is also an issue, higher one often try to win very fast but this override unsatisfactory outcome from opponent and lose patience and calmness.
  • The mood for revenge is so bad, I've seen adv. players lose their cool. It actually broke the level of your anxiety and patience. So the best advice would be to play normal chess without getting angry at your opponent.

In this my game, you can see, white enjoying the space advantage through out the opening stage where I was a bit cramped. However, it is not easy for the white to win the game. To do so white needs patience and cool head. On my 12th move I played Ne8! to exchange the dark square Bishop and after that, this e8 Knight placed it there for next 20 moves in a row!. On 32th move finally it came out in the game and this time it's fatal!. Now obviously White shouldn't play 32.Rd5?? which allow my knight get back in to the game with tempo.

  • I wasn't panic with my position at all
  • I tried not to make any more mistakes.
  • I was not in a hurry with my knight but was quietly waiting
  • I have been calm and patient throughout the game
  • Neither win nor lose, I was enjoining the game of chess!
