Akiba Rubinstein is one of the great uncrowned kings of chess history. He had a #1 World Ranking in 25 different months between 1908 and 1914 according to chessmetrics.com. During his peak strength, he was one of the strongest players in the world and a formidable challenger to reigning champion Emanuel Lasker. However, he was unable to produce a high purse amount demanded by Lasker to accept a challenge.

Rubinstein was known for his exceptional positional play and his endgame strength was considered to rival Capablanca.
