Championship Final

Many thanks to everyone who helped me organise the tournament, and to @Gannet for providing a great stream of the match. This is available on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4NQ-4CBgu0

Also to my opponent in the final @onubense. In my opinion the best atomic player over the last 10 years. It definitely means a lot to me to beat such an opponent, even if he has been less active recently.

If there is interest I am happy to organise another event next year. There's been much talk of other events as well, so hopefully they'll be a lot more organised atomic coming up :)
Yes, it was a magnificent final! Both players played extremely well in my opinion, and my only sadness is that I was not able to provide more accurate commentary, but I am known to be relatively weak in the positional lines of atomic, so that was somewhat to be expected. I want to thank all participants of this tournament for producing so many interesting and enjoyable games, as well as tipau for organizing the event, and the lichess staff for helping to get atomic a bit more publicity.

@tipau I would be very interested in an event next year. I feel there are a few things that could be improved, but overall I think it ran relatively well.
Thanks to the finalists. The games were almost as interesting and exciting as Penguin’s : )

Thanks to Gannet for exceptionally exceptional commentary : )

Also didn’t I accurately predict that the higher the level, the fewer games black would win?
Out of interest I quickly looked at how Black did in each round. The below score is the %age of games where Black got a result (either 1/2 or 0-1):

Qualifier: 50%
Last 32: 47%
Last 16: 42%
Last 8: 35%
Last 4: 48%
Final: 22%

The final looks like an anomoly to me. I felt that I at least had a chance in my Black games. Meanwhile my White games went like a dream and in one game where I wasn't clearly better from the opening I had a lucky moment.

Still, I suppose it could be argued that the semi looks like an anomoly instead.
FWIW, the full data is:

White — Draw — Black (% of all games)
50 09 41 (qualifier)
53 12 35 (round of 32)
58 08 34 (round of 16)
65 19 16 (quarter finals)
52 19 29 (semi finals)
78 22 00 (finals)

Not a huge number of data points, so it’s all rather inconclusive.

As for anomalies, tipau is for some reason particularly averse to draws. He had a grand total of 1 draw prior to the finals.
Hi,
Nice games in the final!
Congrats tipau as the new WCH! And onu for good resistance =)
