Puzzle feature to add

Hi lichess teams

I want to thank all the Lichess team for this great website especially for the puzzle part I want to request a feature in the puzzle part for example to add a parameter about the number of move for each tactical motif it will be very help full especially for beginner player looking to improve calculation through tactics

I guess you mean the number of moves of the solution.

This doesn't look very useful. The number of moves does not correspond to the difficulty of the the puzzle. Also, sometimes the requested solution is a bit short, because there would be multiple solutions otherwise. Or it might be too long, because there is some forcing line. So even if we could see the number of moves, it often would be meaningless.

If it would make things easier, it is not not good for training. If it is misleading, it won't help either...

Also, different variations might have different lengths, obviously. So the number given would not make sense to take into account when you solve the puzzle.

And it is highly unrealistic scenario when you look for tactics in a game.

If you want really fixed-lengths calculation exercises, you can go for the mate-in-1, mate-in-2, mate-in-3 etc. puzzles (also here on lichess). Those are great exercises.
Thank you for your answer I agree with you for the mating part is one of the best and structured part :in mate 1 2 3 or more the objective is clear (mating) and it will in be in x move so it help structure calculation while learning. but in tactical motif yes the objective is clear but in many puzzle for example i have to fork and win a piece but the complete solution to have the point of the puzzle is 4 move and the fork is just one between the 3 move and you don t know when it will finish so which make you calculate a lots of lines and maybe unnecessary moves so the fact that you have an idea about the number of move is a good thing to add in all motif and let the player set the parameter for example to number of move he want to play or set the number to mix if he want to challenge his calculation without fixed number for advanced player like the healthy mix so it will be very helpful for beginner looking to improv to have a control in the number of move as well as advanced players and it will be easy to implement even for mobile app where we don t have the option to choose motif or number of move

But knowing when to stop the analysis is an essential skill to develop... and you don't know that you can stop calculating unless you have made sure there are no more critical moves for your opponent at the end of the line.

From a practical point of view, just ask yourself for each puzzle: What is the best move in that position? You calculate until you found your answer, and make the move(s). Hopefully you have included the opponent's moves in your calculation and can quickly play your line (although in a game, you would really double-check on every move).

Maybe you can show some examples where some more information would be helpful (but helpful shouldn't just mean it's easier to solve). I still fail to see how this would help you get better at chess instead of training you to get lazy. :-)

A real life example: in lichess.org/study/6IbQKa3u/e1wTnOFA#34 after 17... Rad8, I calculated that 18. Qf2 d4 19. Bxd4 Nxd4 20. Rxd4 Bc5 is fine because after 21. Rc4 I'm still a pawn up and if black takes my queen, I can take his. Unfortunately I missed that 21... e3 and 22... b5 traps my rook. Fortunately, so did my opponent so that I only learned this from the engine analysis later.
I think you found my point: skills of stop calculating how you stop if you don t know the limit (it s like calculating the p number in mathematics humanity stop when computation power stop not because we know when to stop) if it s not helpful
why we have mate in 1 2 ...etc it s the same thing . for example if i have this option i know that must use cases of fork or double attack from puzzle it recommended to calculate 3 to 4 move with variations when you have exposed king between 2 or 3 and so on by practice with limit intentionally start releasing that any situation with some tactical advantage you have to calculate 4 move as standard with variations at least. I can say that option is even better than difficulty level that is based on puzzle rating
