that loses a pawn. } 11... dxc4 12. bxc4 Ne5 { The point. c4 pawn is a goner. } 13. Qc2 Nxc4 14. Nf4 Qe7 15. Nc3 Na3 16. Qb2 Rfc8 17. Rfc1 Bd7 { Very weird blunder,
losing the b7 pawn. } 18. Qxb7 { Now I should be winning, but material is equal
and the conversion of the advantage is not soo easy. } 18... Rab8 19. Qa6 Be8 20. Na4 Nb5 21. Nc5 Rd8 22. a4 Rb6 23. Qa5 Nd6 24. Qc3 Ne4 25. Qa3 Nxc5 26. Rxc5 Rdb8 27. Rac1 Rb3 28. Qa1 Bf8 { My opponent is defending stubbornly and I haven't
made any progress over the last 10 moves or so. Now I made a bad move. } 29. R5c3 { This actually helps Black reach an endgame and release some of the
pressure. } 29... Ra3 30. Rxa3 Qxa3 31. Qxa3 Bxa3 32. Ra1 { Now the endgame is equal,
but I was still playing for the win. } 32... Bd6 33. Nd3 Rb3 { In the last 20 moves or
so, my opponent played almost perfectly, while I - obviously, haven't. } 34. Bf1 Kg7 35. a5 h6 36. a6 { I thought this pawn would give me chances in the endgame,
but it turned out to be a weakness. } 36... Bd7 37. Rc1 Kf6 38. Nc5 Bxc5 39. Rxc5 Rb6 40. d5 { I thought this wins for me beceause I get in Rc7, but of course, he
doesn't take. } 40... Ke7 41. dxc6 Rxc6 42. Ra5 { Now I realized I am in trouble. } 42... Rc1 43. f4 Be6 44. Ra4 Bb3 45. Rb4 Bd5 46. Kf2 Ke6 47. Bd3 Ra1 48. Rb2 { The losing
move, placing the rook on a place where it can be skewered. } (48. h4 { Would
maintain the balance. To be honest, cheater or no cheater - I shouldn't lose
this endgame. But my endgame technique is a topic for another day. }) 48... Rh1 49. Rb8 Rxh2+ { Now it is almost all over. I could have put up a tougher
resistance, but the result was never in question. } 50. Ke1 Ke7 51. Be2 Rg2 52. Rb7+ Kd6 53. Rxa7 Rxg3 54. Kd2 h5 55. Bb5 Rg2+ 56. Kc3 Kc5 57. Bd3 h4 58. Rc7+ Kb6 59. Rd7 h3 60. Rxd5 h2 61. Rb5+ Ka7 62. Rb7+ Ka8 63. Rxf7 h1=Q 64. Rf8+ Ka7 65. Rf7+ Kb6 66. a7 Ra2 { I included this game, because it is one of the rare
cheaters I didn't doubt after the game for a single moment. Only as I was
reviewing my losses on lichess while preparing for this article, did I realize
his account got closed. To be fair, his centipawn loss is still very
impressive (17, compared to 31 on my end), but his Bd7 blunder and the fact he
managed to botch a position where he was a pawn up was sufficient to
completely eliminate my suspicion. I think he did it because of that and
because he was playing against a higher rated opponent so a draw was a good
result to him. Glad to see he was unable to continue his "Rickest Ricking" for
too long. } 0-1
