An open file is a file with no pawns of either color on it. The heavy pieces (Rook/Queen) like to be on open files. The Rooks in particular can use them to attack enemy pawns and restrict the enemy King. A common objective is to occupy the 7th or 8th rank with the heavy piece(s). We have already covered many games with open files. For example many of the games in the study Intermediate: Isolated Pawn have open files occurring.
