My opponents clock times out and yet I lose

I was playing a game with a friend and waiting for his move as I watched his clock tick down to zero ,and was not awarded the game win. After that my system stayed frozen with no change. When I rang my opponent he said on his computer my time had clicked down to zero and he had been awarded the game. Please explain what happened, and what the remedy is to prevent recurrence.
Your move probably got lost in transmission. Locally on your computer his clock ticks to zero and your move is shown, but on the lichess server and on your opponent's computer your move is not shown and your clock ticks down to zero. It is very unfortunate. There is not much you can do.
This happens whenever the server of lichess is down. The very person to move is losing the game by timeout. Additionally your losing an extra amount of ratingpoints for "not ending your game properly" and your can be banned for a time as well as punishment for your unsporting behaviour...
