Help with PvE in Minecraft

@SavageAntarctican

For jump scares I am assuming you are talking about in general. Just before you jump around corners be careful. Shields are good for this.

For zombie hoards use a sword and try to have open space. Keep hitting at them then going back, repeat. For baby zombies a shield will be useful.

With normal spiders. Try jumping before the attack to get a critical hit. A stone axe critical does more damage than a diamond sword swipe. You should be able to take out the spider in 1-3 hits. Higher tiers of tools will lower the amount of hits needed.

Cave spiders are trickier, They are smaller faster and give you a poison effect. NOTE: Poison will not kill you on normal difficulty, only on hard but will even sometimes get you to half a heart. A shield is important to block. Bows are good to deal with them. When you take out the cave spiders in the area rush towards the spawner to break it before more can spawn. I would use at least an iron pick to speed it up. A bucket of milk or honey bottle is useful, because when you consume those items, they remove all effects including poison.

How to time your hits right. You can use a sword. Swords have the sweep attack so it is easier to attack the mobs hitbox. Practice makes perfect. When jumping on let's say a zombie with an axe for a critical, don't hesitate in the middle of the attack. Just go through with it once you feel confident enough.

Here are a list of things that may help you deal with the following above and in general.

Enchantments can be useful. These 4 are useful for killing mobs faster. (With Sword or Axe) NOTE: Axes cannot have sweeping edge.

Sharpness: It increases the damage you do to all mobs. It goes up to Sharpness V.

Sweeping edge: Sweeping edge increases the damage you do to mobs in a sword sweep. It goes up to Sweeping edge III.

Smite: It increases the damage you do to undead mobs, such as zombies, zombie variants, skeletons, skeleton variants, the wither,and even undead nether mobs. It goes up to Smite V.

Bane of Arthropods:It increases the damage you do to like the name suggests, arthropods, spiders, cave spiders, and silverfish. (I would not recommend this enchantment.) It goes up to Bane of Arthropods V.

Other helpful tips.

Have useful survival items with you. (I would carry these at all times.)

:Water bucket

:Food

:Torches

:A weapon

:A shield

:Armor (Preferably iron)

:And if you can, Totems or Gapples.
@Legobuilder101 I agree, but Bane of Arthropods is TRASH. Sharpness is the best enchantment for your sword.

And poison does not kill you. Poison can take you half a heart but they dont kill you. But staying in a mineshaft with half a heart isnt very fun.

And you forgot the number #1 strat against a zombie horde. Just stack up three blocks and use critical hits. Since you are 3 blocks high in the air they have no way of hitting you. Same with baby zombies.

But if you are in a enclosed space use a shield or run away. And having a lava bucket is very useful as you can burn them with that lava and pick the lava back.
Another very useful item when you are fighting is a fishing rod. Though it may seem strange a fishing rod is very helpful.

Hit them once with that fishing rod. If they are near than you can simply hit them with the rod (left click) or if they are some blocks away use right click on them to get some knockback. Keep doing this until you come closer to them. Use your fishing rod (right click) to "fish" them and then quickly switch to your sword to land a combo on them.
This method is also used in PvP by pros.

Another method is using snowballs. Same thing though. Snowball them and then quickly switch to sword and land a combo.
(eggs is another option thought getting eggs take some time)

If you want to make a long range weapon make a crossbow instead of a bow (unless if you dont have the materials for a crossbow) because crossbows are easier to use than bows.
@DarkAntart1can
I did mention Bane was trash. And I did mention poison can't kill you in normal difficulty.

Rods and snowballs/eggs no longer do damage 1.9+

With lava, you can set yourself on fire.
@Legobuilder101 The rods and snowballs are not for damage. They for giving knockback to the mod/player so that you can land a combo on them. A combo can do up to 7 hits and more!

>With lava, you can set yourself on fire.

That is true, but as long as you use it corrrectly it can be very useful. For example in a horde. Just place the lava on them and they all burn and die.
And if you do get set on lava you can use your water bucket.
for jumpscares just play play play you will get used to mobs appearing from nowhere and it wont scare you anymore
@Legobuilder101 Yes axes dont have sweeping edge but minecraft is looking to make a second combat update where axes will have sweep attacks if enchanted with sweeping edge
@SavageAntarctican

"1) How do I avoid jumpscares?"

Play on peaceful mode.

"2) How do I deal with hordes of Zombies (is water bucket the only effective solution when you don't have sweeping edge)?"

You need "Smite V", "knockback II" and "fire aspect II" enchantment on your sword. Forget the shield but a good armor is also necessary maybe even with "Thorns III" so they take damage touching you. On the outside world set many light sources and just dig a hole between you and the zombies with a little bridge that can be activated with a button or just a hole you can jump over but zombies can't. In caves build a wall between you and zombies and leave a 1x1 hole where you can deal damage to them without them being able to reach you. You can also build traps or spawn iron golems or get a lot of dogs.

"3) How do I fight spiders effectively? (Especially the cave spider spawner)"

Not at all, you usually destroy the spawner as fast as possible, kill the remaining in their own net and move on.

"4) How do I time my hits right (occasionally a problem)?"

Just wait until the sword is in its starting position again, so the next strike has much force like in real life.
