People leaving games when in bad positions

Hi guys,

I'm relatively new to Lichess and I have already began to notice the unusual amount of people leaving games when in losing positions, is this a big issue? I mean I feel bad taking the claim victory button when they may have disconnected but I notice it happening more when a lower rated player is beating a higher rated player, is rage quitting in chess really that common? it seems that pride is at a all time high and people can't bring themselves to click resign.

Are there any systems in place which ban people for repeating this practice? I feel like if they are abusing the game and wasting other players time, a punishment should be in order.

Chess hard or go home.
Yes there are systems that are (temporaryly) banning players for such behavior. It's called playban and it prolongs the more often a player repeats to abandon games or stalls on time.
Yeah this has happened quite frequently to me too. If a player does it enough, I'm pretty sure they can get a tempban from playing games. I don't get why people can't just resign...
Wow I had responded to your posts but clearly my internet played with me. It's good they have that in place, It doesn't happen as frequent as it did previously, I suppose it happens less in rapid as people tend to allocate more time in those games. Thanks guys.
@Jaggedboard I actually find it happen more in rapid. And what's really annoying is if sometimes in rapid players just stay in game and run their clock all the way to zero. That means you've gotta wait like 10 minutes to get your win...
@Water_Flame Ah really? I've definitely had people run it down a bit but not the whole 10 mins! that would really suck!
