Leaving without resigning

Hi there,

I often see players leaving a game without resigning, which isn't nice to do. In fact recently I often see a message coming up:
"Warning, ... Letting time run out instead of resigning will result in a temporary ban."

However - am I not getting something or how is the one that left the game supposed to see this message? Maybe it should send an automatic notification instead. I'm pretty sure people will stop with this, if their inbox is full of such warnings :-)

On a sidenote, I'm pretty sure some new players just don't know what the buttons mean. Maybe there should be some kind of "tutorial for the interface" for newbies.
The message you are seeing is for you, so you will know that they will be punished if they continue such behaviour.
Hopefully, the message will dissuade you from creating a thread like this one. A thread which pops up seemingly everyday.

By the way, does the temporary ban ever become permanent, if the player is constantly doing such things? If it's just a ban for 10 minutes, then it does not work.
I do applaud this new feature, but I was also confused as to the intent of the message. If the player who left is also sent a warning to their inbox, maybe just a slight tweak to the 1st part of the message would help? (not guaranteeing this change will end Oscillations frustrations...heh)

I believe some think : Letting the time run for a while, expresses dedication to the position.

Proposed message: "Awarded a healthy 30 minute nap ban."

SOLUTION: Use a pop up counter with a question to auto resign. Add a clock count down sound. The pop up is : "Please press Continue or Resign"

The player delaying must press Continue to let the game run longer. If they do not press the button, auto resigns in 30 seconds. I picked 30 seconds because that's the max pre-move time given in OTB games.

In the chat, the question appears with the answer of the opponent. It proves to the opponent that the player is in front of the chessboard.

I don't think it can ever become permanent, but I recall a few people coming to the forum to complain about constantly receiving 24-hour bans...

I would hate to have been disturbed during my thoughts by a popup dialog.
Imagine a fight between Karpov and Kasparov. One of them is in deep calculation in a critical moment. Then the arbiter steps to him, taps him, and says: Either resign, or sign this form, that you still want the game to go on ...

As someone already mentioned, if that message is intended to inform the player remaining ingame they should definitively change the text and not begin the sentence with "Warning <OtherPlayer> ..."

The text proposed by @kzce would certainly be an improvement to prevent misunderstandings.
Should an arbiter wake up the player that is napping or the one delaying the game when they have a forced move?

There is a rule in chess when not putting sufficient effort to play the game. Rules are not always detailed to permit Arbiters to solve special situations like this.

Since we are playing on the internet, we could assume we are playing a blind person. The Appendix D for the blind, says something about an admissible special chess clock. It announces the time and number of moves.

Since we cannot prove we are playing against sighted players, the normal rules should not be valid. So when there is a long delay an automated feature could announce the moves like we would be playing a blind player or we could have a button to press to announce the moves of both players. It could have the same purpose as a horn on a car. If the sound is off, then maybe a flashing foreground message light is the effective solution. As long as it is not directly in front of the chess board.

Imagine when one player is visually disabled and the opponent has a hearing problem. Some sort of assistance feature is needed to draw their attention that it is their move to play.
