why do people have to be so horrible in the chat?

@h2b2 well for what do you report them if they say nothing about you? That seems even crazier, this guy does nothing, he doesn't do anything to me or other, no he is actually hurting, but i go out of my way to report them, to ruin their day strictly out of empathy.

Something is always done about it. They may get timeouts, warnings, we may restricts their communications or close their accounts in some cases.
#11 because not everyone shares my beliefs and some people who receive their abuse do feel bad.
Based on the quality of the chat, I came to the conclusion that a large proportion of my opponents are 13-year-olds.
So what you do as an adult in this situation is to switch the settings to kid mode (;.
Humans are pretty shitty creatures that are driven by their ego and desires, If you don t believe me just take a look at history. The atrocities caused during the second world war and pretty much any other war that preceded it, gulags in Stalin era (the practice is probably still ongoing in some countries such as NK) or slavery. We are lucky that we live in modern era which gave us brief respite from the wars (except for some unlucky people that were born in countries like Libya or Afghanistan). If murders weren t illegal humans would be killing others pretty much all the time, even so they are the second biggest killers of humans that are second only to disease spreading mosquitoes. Average human only cares about themselves and their close family (parents, wife or husband and children), while there are some people that genuinely care about the well being of others there is also a large number of people that don t even care about their own family and some even abuse their partners and children. So do you really find it strange that people insult you when you dare to hurt their precious little ego by defeating them in a game of chess?
@monsieur_mangetout

When this type of behaviour happens, you might consider it a wonderful opportunity to do yourself and the community a valuable service by simply reporting the most egregiously bad behaviour and blocking all players you feel "crossed the line".

This way, instead of feeling frustrated by displays of childish behaviour, you can feel as if you are taking action to reduce the amount of pollution that is thrown in the Lichess environment. Just like picking up a plastic cup someone threw on the sidewalk and putting it in the garbage bin. It requires only seconds and you certainly won't have to do it that often anyway. I never play on Lichess but I have played thousands of games on a "competing" platform and haven't had to use this method more than a handful of times.

If every player used this simple method, a vast amount of "polluters" would be identified and dealt with by the community and have the opportunity to grow into more productive and valued members or look for another swimming hole where bad behaviour goes unchecked.
Thanks so much to all who recommended kid mode! Turned it off to come back here to say thanks, but it's staying on going forward!
In case you don't want the kid mode, you can also disable the chat manually before the game. I also had this issue with toxic people in my chat, and I only let the chat open when I'm playing with friends.
They don't mean to be horrible. They're just scared and hurt and lashing out.
