Reconnecting with old Bug Fam friends
playing high quality 30 sec bug vs googa
Something that I really liked about 2020 was how much growth we saw in variants. In the past year, the amount of games played per month has at least doubled for each variant on lichess, and in some variants, the growth has been even larger.
Another thing that I liked seeing was @catask becoming ridiculously strong in new variants. While he did pick up zh and bug in 2019, he became so incredibly strong in 2020 not only in zh and bug, but also becoming quite good in atomic and horde as well.
And last, but certainly not least, I loved how IQ_QI trained CrazyAra to play atomic, and am very grateful to him for sharing AtomicAra with me. The rise of neural network engines in variants will be fascinating to watch in 2021 and years to come.
I look forward to seeing how the variants community grows in 2021!

ACWC, HMVC, and new rating highs were my best parts of 2020.
