Insulted after winning an Exchange for piece and pawn down

Was I in the wrong for saying "gg" after winning against someone who tried to flag me while ahead in material?

It was a good game until he started playing badly to run my clock down. Then he just proceeded to attack me in the chat box. I just defended my "gg" comment because it was an interesting position and not crushing for him by any stretch.

He also flaunted his elo as if being 1800 FIDE gives him the freedom to accost people for to reason.
Apart that gg reads like *gg* (big grin):

I recommend to say nothing at all especially not after winning a game. You can do that offline when you see each other and have other signals of communication as well. But online...

No. Don’t do that. I don’t want to hear anything and I dont say anything no matter whether I win, lose, have luck or not.
"Apart that gg reads like *gg* (big grin)"

Not if you always assume the best of your fellow players. :)

Imho it's a sign of politeness, arsenalfanrichi. I see no wrong in your conduct, at all.
The winner says to the loser: „Good game!“

Doing so in the internet this starts in half of all cases a war.

(Ok, a bit exaggerated. ;) I would use caution though.)
Y i agree. The rare times i say it is when i played i played at least 4/5 games with the same guy and i/he got(/want) to stop. Then i use the "ty" "gg".
Ok I guess I understand how it could be construed as bragging. I just thought I should say it as it turned into a middlegame where it became a battle of ideas. Aside from the end of the game it was engaging and thought I should let him know that I appreciated the game.
I really don't see anything wrong, saying that it was a good game is only bad manners when you're actually crushing them. Even in an offline match, even if you win pretty hard, it's still proper conduct to shake hands and say "good game".
@arsenalfanrichi u are seriously and definitely too sensitive in this case... u say gg and u don't need to explain it to no one, some guy can get mad some guy will laugh, you can't match everyone's humor... advice, just don't care too much what opponent is writing there, especially opponent who just lost the game :)
for online games if winner says "gg" it's bad manners
Saying "gg" is just proper manners. Not your fault if your opponent feels insulted.
If he does become upset, simply reply with "lol".
