Why are people cruel to others?

What motivations and incentives create this behavior?

What proportion of people is this true for?

What proportion of people get more satisfaction from being cruel than nice?
I fully agree #1, a quick mat in 1 or 2 is nice but a mat in 4 or 5 or more is pure crual torture.
Because humans are both emotional and logical. If I think back to when I was cruel to someone, it was because they made me mad; I was emotionally unstable and mad so I did something "un-logical". Although I think I'm good at avoiding this; some people are also cruel because they want to emotionally feel superior.
When people see someone with severe handicap, honestly how much do you think feel:

1.Empathy, sympathy, a desire to help, or general malaise

2. Superiority, comfort, satisfaction
How much do I honestly think feel when people see someone with a severe handicap?

Definitely.
