If I may, please ask yourself why non-increment is the most popular time control in the first place? Is it because that's the way it's always been? Or is it because that's what people are genuinely attracted to? It seems to be more based out of tradition than anything to me.
I've never seen good evidence for why non-increment time controls are what most people want. I can easily argue people like non-increment because that's the only thing they've tried.
For example, if the standard was that 1 or 2 second increment was normal, would it be due to the tradition itself or because people liked it? What if all non-increment tournaments were replaced with increment? By definition they would be the most popular as well. Staff has not provided a legitimate competition among time controls.
What is your evidence to saying people like non-increment more, other than a manipulated outlier statistic that people play it more, which is due to the default setting that tournaments for not having increment in the first place?
Side note: Custom made tournaments never attract as many people. By asking for custom tournaments, you are deflecting away from my intended point.
