All world champions are male because more men play chess.
I am willing to believe that, though it may be the other way around: more men play chess because they are better at it.
Anyway, the explanation is not root cause. No explanation has been provided why more men play chess.
Cited neurological differences in brain do not convince.
Why are all but one world champions white? (only Anand is Asian)
Why is a disproportional number of 6 world champions from Jewish descent? (Steinitz, Lasker, Botvinnik, Tal, Fischer, Kasparov)
Why is a disproportionla number of 9 world champions (Soviet-)Russian? (Alekhine, Botvinnik, Tal, Smyslov, Petrossian, Spassky, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik)
Certainly not neurological difference.
I think it is more cultural.
The cultural values explain why so many Jews play chess well and also why some countries like Russia bring forth so many world champions. In a society where the game of chess is held in high esteem, it is more likely that champions emerge than in a society that considers the game essentially a waste of time.
There is also a biological aspect, i.e. hormonal.
In nature males tend to friendly fight to establish their rank in their group. Females engage in more social activities.
Chess is a proxy fight or proxy war.
Women do in general not like games and even less 2 person zero sum games like chess. If they like games, it is rather multiplayer non zero sum games like Catan or Monopoly.
Little girls in prime school show some interest in games like chess, but that usually fades away by the time they go to intermediary school. In the younger categories of youth players, boys and girls are roughly equal in numbers. In the higher age groups many more boys than girls remain.
There is also an economical factor. The emergence of Asian players: Viswanathan Anand, Ding Liren, Hou Yifan is recent and IMHO is linked to the economic uprising of India and China, providing for free time and money to send on the luxury of playing the chess game.
