IP Address Problems

@cFlour
"Not all 1500 people use the internet service at the same time, so the service providers buy less IP's than the number of clients."

You're suggesting they have 66% of the required number, though. Depending on the ISP and location I think they'd quickly get into trouble; there's a lot of always-on devices these days which would immediately fail if what you say is true!

"do lichess IP bans imply on the device or internet address?"

Did you read my last message? How can they ban your device, when they can't identify it from your other devices on the same IP address?
ISPs also generally don't give out IPs to end-user devices...

Your home network is generally always connected to the internet, even when you are currently not.

#17 There are actually less IPv4 addresses than you think, especially since some companies and organizations own huge chunks of the address space. There are certainly not enough for all humans, not to mention if everybody has 5 devices. But ofc that's why we got IPv6 which nowadays finally is pretty widely supported and has enough addresses for every human to have like a million for themselves.

Everyone can have 500 devices if they're behind their router. And all the mobile devices I've ever used on a mobile network have been allocated a local IP address (10.x.x.x on my phone) so plenty of scope there too. We're dragging our heels a little on IPv6 adoption though.
@Doofenshmirtz Since there are only ~4.5 billion addresses, it's still isn't enough, not to mention IPs required for servers, network nodes, etc. And as mentioned, huge chunks are owned by organizations. For example, Apple casually owns all IP addresses starting with "17.", i.e. over 16 million of them.
>>> I know for a fact that most internet providers change our IP Address every time we restart our internet modem.

You've tested what percentage of the modems on what percentage of the ISPs in the world?

LiChess tracks and uses the IP address of everyone accessing the site. They're aware if someine is using a VPN.

The system works.
This is a very interesting discussion which I have been wondering about for a while now. Thank you for bringing it up, @cFlour .

I'm not sure who I am supposed to believe. There are a long range of different answers/opinions so I don't know what I should acknowledge as a "fact".
