Strategy books for 1700?

> Pawn Structure Chess is by Soltis. Rios wrote Chess Structures: A Grandmaster Guide.

Good point. I was thinking of Chess Structures, although from what I've heard they're fairly similar and both are good.
Chess Structures: A Grandmaster guide is for advanced players - i would say 1800 fide and above, the Soltis book is for lower levels although I don't like it very much.

I would recommend the book of Jörg Hickl "the power of pawns" which suits your level. (Dieses Buch gibt es übrigens auch auf Deutsch, die Muttersprache des Autors).
How about Keres and Kotov's The Art of the Middle Game ? I though that was good. Though don't think there is a version in algebraic notation. Would also agree with recommendations for Stean's Simple Chess.
It will be difficult to find a typical strategy book because they are aimed at higher rated players. Maybe Silman's The Amateur's Mind?

That's actually the book I'm reading since yesterdy and so far I can follow quite easily. :)
"... lower rated players will get something useful out of [the first section (by Golombek) of The Art of the Middle Game] ..., [Kotov's 'Strategy and Tactics of Attack on the King' and 'Various Pawn Positions in the Center'] will be enjoyed by Class B and A players ... the two Keres’ offerings: 'How to Defend Difficult Positions' and 'The Art of Analysis.' ... are advanced, and I think that players of expert strength and higher will get the most out of them (actually, 'The Art of Analysis' is for senior masters, IMs, and grandmasters). ..." - IM Jeremy Silman

Begin with Stean's "Simple Chess".
Then go to Silman's "The amateurs mind" (in deutsch erhältlich: Die Überwindung des amateurhaften Denkens)
Another one would be Euwe's "Amateur wird Meister" or "Urteil und Plan im Schach", also from Max Euwe.
Or vice versa :-)
Stay away from Nimzowitsch for some time.

If you like that book (Silman's), then you might also like "Chess Master vs Chess Amateur" by Euwe and Meiden. Be aware that it is in descriptive notation. However, I have created a study with the 25 games from that book. I also have studies with the games/positions from Stean's book and Chernev's book mentioned above.

As a 1700 I strongly recommend to you leaving Strategy for now and focus much more on Tactics, work on your tactics in the right way consistently then after getting relatively good at it, go for Strategy then.
