Buying 1\2 points at tournies, any thoughts?

As mentioned before this seems to be a US / UK thingy.

Anyone can explain the way one can enter the tournaments missing the first round?
The point of these is to allow people to play in the tournament if they can't be there for every round not because people are trying to gain some sort of advantage (think about it, strong players will be penalized by 1/2 point because they probably would have won their game while weak players will lose their other games anyways so it doesn't even matter), and there's a reason that most tournaments only allow 3 or so of these.

It's just for logistical reasons, very few people ever take 3 byes usually just 1 or 2, and I'd rather see a player take 1 or 2 byes and still be able to play 5 other rounds or so rather than them deciding to skip the tournament.
You have a good point. My issue was mostly onenif translation. I incorrectly thought players "bought" "buy" their .5 points. However it's "bye" and no transactions are made....I hope.

I completely misunderstood the "bye" system because not the wording.

All I know is that a teen player that just played levy (Gotham) and both had the same score but one had not played a single game!e. Both had 1.5 points but one played for
Them the other had 3x byes. 1.5 points and not played a game!
@Sarg0n I defenitely have been to tournaments in Germany where half or zero point byes are given if requested beforehand.

@GiGGidi
I think it is a good ruling to offer half point byes, because it offers more players the ability to participate (although I have never taken one, because I want to play). They dont mess up the standings at the top, and in swiss tournaments are designed in a way, that if you get more points early on, than your future opponents will be better, so in the end an early half point doesnt make a big difference. Only exception is players at the bottom who might not be able to score at all, but then again, who cares about #80/100 or #95/100.
The half point also protects weaker players, imagine you lose the first few rounds and are looking forward to get an equal pairing only to be paired against a strong player who missed the first rounds.

> @IveBeatenTal I have no idea what the late point awad is. Iam literally talking about a tournament that allows you to bye or buy (unsure of the word) up to 3 1\2 points. Essentially skipped three games and took draws because they were unable to attend the the games.

> @sheckley666 Similar, but in this tournament you can bye three 1\2 points. What do you think about that?
>
> Just seems wrong. Something doesn't feel right about it. If you cant attend the game you forefiet your chance of scoring 1\2 a point. Especially if you can't attend THREE games then no way should you be able to bye 1.5 points as you can in said tournament.

owhh okayy!
@QEDemonstrandum is your name related to physics? W
QED, interesting, confusing, amazing stuf, or I'm way off?

Back to the subject, yes the player was much weaker. So would he gain Elo from the .5 as he was much weaker then the matches he missed. Or is it just points gained no fide or USCF gained from byes?

Sure, you can request a zero point bye. But half a point?
@Sarg0n
