Karpov vs Fischer

Karpov said in an interview that he estimated his chances of beating Fischer in 1975 at 40%.
Too bad the match never came off. It would have been a very interesting paring and it would have been great for chess.

As for who would win?

Who knows...at this point it's all conjecture.
I think Fischer would had won in 1975. Very likely 1978. I wish we had Fischer-Karpov, Fischer-Kasparov, and even Fischer-Miles games on the record (Tony Miles was a very strong Grandmaster but not quite world champion level player as well as a very colorful personality and someone who was probably really cool to hang out with when he was with us); I do not think Fischer would had lost to Tony Miles playing 1. ... a6 after his trademark 1. e4.

Here is my question: Would Fischer’s mental health been better off if he had continued playing chess after 1972? I think Fischer would had been more rounded and better off if he kept playing Chess. Both Fischer and Morphy stopped playing Chess and both ended up with mental health issues later in life.

To Fischer’s credit, he gave us the increment clock and he gave us Chess960 long after he stopped playing Chess.

Fischer was controversial with extreme political opinions, but as far as I know he has never ever been diagnosed as mentally ill. A psychiatrist who was his friend in Iceland denied that Fischer had any mentally illness.

It is a small wonder that Fischer ever became World Champion. He was reluctant to come to Rejkjavik and play. It took a lot of persuasion from Henry Kissinger, Jim Slater and Anthony Saidy to get Fischer to Rejkjavik.

It is also a miracle that Fischer did play on game 3 and the rest. He had booked on 3 flights back to the USA.

Fischer was willing to play in the 1974 Nice Olympiad, but his demands like a separate room for him and his opponent only were rejected.

Fischer was willing to play Karpov for the title, but his demands like first to win 10 games and Fischer retains his title in case of 9:9 were rejected.
I actually like Fischer's way to win the championship. @tpr So Fischer was mentally fine, just got molded into a controversial player due to the lack of attention from his mother and other factors that may have influenced him.
fischers the initiative player karpovs the positional player.I am saying 51% for fischer and 49% for karpov
