I think the main problem here was the word "it". I assumed it referred to "g7" whereas it seems to refer to "perpetual check" (as Eldrail already mentioned above). That sometimes happens with this tricky IT word. :-)
And, of course, your "WOULD have" remark makes sense as well. "should have" means it WAS played but DID NOT secure the draw.

Actually, the more I read the sentence in question, the more clearly I see its meaning and the less I understand my confusion about it. :-D

wait, the title says "Caruana takes the lead in round 7" and later in the article it says "Round 7 starts tomorrow at 14:00 UTC." Am I missing something?

no it's a typo just click on the link and the study shows round 8.
