Unable to claim 3 fold move repetition after opponent makes a different move??

Just played a classical game where my opponent had a winning advantage but was very low on time. So to gain some time, they repeated moves 3 times. Since I realized that they can't find a win, I repeated along with them really fast. They changed the move after the 3 fold repetition and the button to claim a 3 fold draw disappeared.
In an actual tournament I've seen multiple times that a player is on say, move 60 and looks at their scoresheet and notices that there is a 3 fold repetition at move 51 and calls the arbiter who then adjudicates the game as a draw. I couldn't claim a draw. I even clicked on the previous move in the hopes of seeing the 3 fold button but did not. IMO this is a major bug in Lichess. It's an automatic draw in bullet games so why the differential treatment for classical games? I went on to lose the game since my opponent found the win with the newly added time. But I feel I deserve the draw because I got my opponent really down on time where they needed a 3 fold to get enough time to find a win.

Otb comparison: if there is a 3x repetition situation you have to claim immediately. If you touch a piece you lose the right to claim, instantly. Unless yout both repeat again.

Otb you would have to proceed the following: tell yor opponent that you intend to move 58. ... Kc6 claiming draw which is a draw offer as well. If he doesn't accept: write down your move & call the arbiter who will go through the game at another board and support your claim. Having touched your King everything is over, the chance has gone by.

PS: I don't know where all those starnge home-made rule "variations" stem from...
Yes I saw the rule in Wikipedia after I wrote the post. Well I guess what I saw in a tournament was straight up illegal. On another note, It is easy to be pointer-happy and make a quick 3 fold repetition and miss the exact moment to claim a draw (as did happen in my game) . It's unmissable in an OTB game under any circumstances for successive 3 fold repetition like this. Perhaps there should be some thought towards this happening more frequently in the online form of the game. After all bullet is (rightly) given the advantage of an automatic draw even though its not legal as per the rules.
I thought I had it on! Turns out it was just on for <x seconds. Cost me a close game. Thanks.
To claim the draw it has to be _your_ move. If you move before claiming it, you give up the possibility to claim the draw if the opponent then diviates from the 3-fold repition.

I think the automatic "claim draw" in bullet/blitz is an option you can enable/disable.

Your statement of seeing people get a draw from earlier positions due to a 3-fold repition is not correctly adjudicated. A 3-fold repition does not automatically draw the game unless it has been claimed correctly (see FIDE 9.2.1.) However! The game IS automatically drawn if the same position has occured 5 times on the board (see FIDE 9.6). Then it doesn't matter how many moves you do afterwards. The game is a draw regardless of whether it was claimed or not. So I just assume it is in these cases you have seen people get a draw from earlier positions.

I hope this is a good enough answer.

EDIT: I saw you got your answers before I was enable to post my answer! :)
#1 #7 Before playing the threefold move you can "offer draw" and playing the threefold move converts the draw offer into a draw claim. The "Claim draw" button is only displayed after a threefold repetition has occurred.

My UI suggestion to Lichess (especially for time scrambles) is that pressing the "offer draw" button should keep the button pressed until the player un-presses it and thereafter both players (first, the player, and next the opponent) move again.

Keeping the button pressed in a time scramble seems unpractical
Just enabling the autoclaim is simpler and works fine.
