Each player can see their own pieces, but not those of their opponent. For this reason, it is necessary to have a third person (or computer) act as an umpire, with full information about the progress of the game. When it is a player's turn he or she will attempt a move, which the umpire will declare to be 'legal' or 'illegal'. If the move is illegal, the player tries again; if it is legal, that move stands. Each player is given information about checks and captures. They may also ask the umpire if there are any legal captures with a pawn.

I've seen it live OTB once, it seemed really enjoyable!

you can still try to play kriegspiel here you have to download some styles by lichess invisible pieces for i use chrome for it userstyles.org/styles/164095/invisible-black-pieces-for-lichess so this set you can use as white userstyles.org/styles/164096/invisible-white-pieces-for-lichess so both you and your up need to have the 2 styles

but there need to be a 3th one to say if one can take material pawn tries etc so this variant is perfectly playable with these boards on discord with voice
