swiss tournament

Swiss system has more waiting between games. This is the future. People do not like waiting.
@ChessWhiz

This is not the future. This is the present.

The OP's poll suggests that some people don't mind waiting. Why should it not be an option? Especially given the number of options of sometimes quite silly chess variants, which are by no means universally popular.
@Toadofsky
I see your technical concerns. And what if we would try to think about some easier solutions? Ladder for example, seems very exciting to me, something similar like http://gameknot.com/ladder.pl
This could be applied both fast and slow time control games.

In nutshell:
- The goal is to move up the Ladder, ultimately to the #1 position. Players move up the Ladder by winning Ladder games. Players move down the Ladder when they lose Ladder games, and when other players move up the Ladder ahead of them.

- Players can limit the max number of simultaneous Ladder games they are playing

- Players can only challenge other players on the Ladder if their positions are within 1/10th of the total Ladder ranks.

- Ladder challenges cannot be declined, and Ladder games cannot be cancelled.

- When challenging another player to a Ladder game, the player who started the game will play Black, the defending player will play White.

What do you think, it would be easier to implement than the Swiss tournament?
What is so difficult about swiss pairings? Toadofsky pointed out unlimited entries which would present a problem. But limit entries to 1st sign-ups. Place them in groups of 6. Winners move on the next round. Is this so difficult? More of a round robin format than swiss.
Ladder is a good idea. But it's an on going event. Players move up and down, but it never ends. Not really a tournament, which result's in a winner after x amount of rounds.
One concern which has been raised in this thread is that Swiss tournaments require a more extended time commitment from players. But in an official OTB Swiss event, you can withdraw at any point by asking the TD to remove you from the tournament. I see no reason why a similar feature could not exist within automatic pairings online.

I would be interested in Swiss tournaments implemented on lichess and would certainly participate if they ever were tried.
There si no problem if there is arena tournaments and also swiss touraments, as on chess.com. People who wants to play in swiss tournament can do it and people who wants to do arena tournaments can do it.It would be intersting for th developpement of lichess to do it.
