Is chess a good way to spend time?

I think that the chess it's good for mental skills and all that stuff but is ti worth it?
Whatever makes you happy is worth your time. Don't let anyone else tell you anything else.

Personally i find digital art to be my hobby, but i agree with you! You choose what you want to do, it's not anyone's choice to pick what you like and what you don't.
Definitely worth it. How can it not be with the greatest game in the world?

Just don't go Bobby Fischer and neglect the other important matters in life!
@Angel_Olaza This is another subjective opinion but basically all that matters is what you think. No two experts agree on anything.

However if I had children I would tell them... by all means learn to play chess , but not too well.

Instead focus on learning to play guitar and sing in 10 different languages because you will always find work with those skills. With chess it's limited and often chess masters live lonely lives and die broke.

There are exceptions of course, you could become the next Magnus, Garry or Beth, but the smart money in Vegas says, that you won't. It's much more likely that you will get kicked out of every coffeeshop that caters to chess players.

The bottom line is that chess is a great distraction and time killer that is inexpensive and challenging to play. It gives much enjoyment to millions. There are degrees of course, because video games are often mastered in a much shorter period of time than chess and nobody plays old video games like Pong, Space Invaders or Asteroids. Or do you Tesla owners?

On the other hand Chess pieces can be played with cradle to the grave and still the game will always be challenging.

not sure what ancient video games have to do with electronic engines in cars (especially since tesla tends to go towards automated driving), but reality is closing in fast on people like me with their 2004 engines nearly falling apart. and its a good thing, no matter how freaking awesome i am at driving.
What I mean about getting kicked out of coffeeshops @Alice_ex is that almost every place that caters to chess players fails because chess players will come in for hours and buy one coffee or none, take up space, make noise and scare away paying customers.

Generally speaking of course.

There are exceptions, but in my experience, chess players are notoriously cheap and troublesome for shop owners.

Btw, I also resemble my accusations. Am I being too hard on chess players or am I out of line?
Oh @Rookitiki in the Tesla I drove, you can play those old video games on the screen while parked by turning the wheel instead of a joystick> Just stumbled across this one day while waiting for my passengers. Cool huh?
