I am around 1700 and cannot for the life of me learn any other opening except Scotch/King Pawn as white and Fishing Pole / Indian as black. Please help. Am I too old. (I am about the retirement age for a footballer).
Maybe you should consider a career as football trainer? :)
Many successful players remain loyal to a narrow range of openings throughout their career. It has less to do with specifics than with the understanding and implementation of concepts. The level which you have achieved is entirely respectable, with each new gain in rating points forming the basis for the next level in your understanding. All players become discouraged from time to time, but no one loses the battle to increase their level of understanding, unless and until they abandon the quest for knowledge. One of the marvelous things about chess is that it remains captivating and challenging at every level. Persist, and you will grow.
That is good thing you do, playing openings you understand, important is you do not have drinking problem ;)

Well, if it is just the opening and not the drink, then it is ok :-)
Scotch is a good opening. Do not change that, try to play it better.
