I wonder why people confuse the words capturing and eating.

In Italy it is very common to hear "eating a piece" instead of "capturing a piece". I have personally learned "eat" first.

If you think about it, when a piece captures another and this one is removed from the board or it literally disappears in an online game, it reminds of the movement that macrophages perform when they incorporate bacteria or other threats to the organisms.
This is called phagocytosis, which derives from Ancient Greek word "phago", which means "to eat". en.wiktionary.org/wiki/phago-
