The whole bishop v night thing

@savage47

You don't need to explain yourself, if you ain't got the goods others can and are answering.

E for effort buddy ;)
@tpr Then how do I do this Fianchetto maneuver without making a target on the G or B files?
Man, guys, u r feeding the troll like crazy; put this annoyance on ur ignore list, pls.
Everyone enjoys a good troll because they get a laugh out of it. However, the majority of them will go overboard and it gets annoying.
@YGNR the answer is very complicated. Garry Kasparov thinks bishops are worth 3.5 pawns and knights 3 pawns. Anand has once said that he prefers knights. Both of them are former world champions, and even they disagree. It is all about personal preference. That being said, bishops are better in the endgame and in open positions. Knights are better in closed positions.
The bishop pair against a B+N is worth a half-pawn. A single bishop is more versatile than a single knight but then it comes down to who knows how to use each piece better.
It really depends on the position as to which is better. I could set up a lot of positions where a knight is better, and a lot of positions where a bishop is better.

In my experience here is when I think one or the other is generally better:

Game Phase:

Opening: Tie
Middle Game: Bishop
End game: Bishop

Open/closed:

Open: Bishop
Closed: Knight
Semi-Open: Bishop

Special Role:

Need a blockaider: Knight usually
Need a piece to pin something: Bishop, and knights can not pin
Need a piece to fork something: Knight
Need a piece for a smothered mate: Knight
Need a defender in general: Knight
Need an attacker in general: Bishop
Need a piece to park on a nice outpost in enemy territory: Knight

Pawns:

Pawns on both side of board: Bishop
Pawns on one side: Knight slightly
Pawns on the same color as bishop: Knight
Pawns on the opposite color of the bishop: Bishop

Piece combinations:
Bishop Pair > Bishop + Knight > Knight Pair

If I had to put an estimated piece value I would say that
Knight usually = 3
Bishop usually = 3.25
Bishop pair however = 7 if your opponent has no bishops
& a well-rooted knight in enemy territory is easily worth a rook
