New way of abandoning a game

It was this game: lichess.org/BTvMf8YEZmMO

Within seconds of a 10+0 game he dropped his queen
He then didn't make another move
It said that he resigned with 5 seconds on the clock, so he didn't get the warning about the ban
He somehow auto-resigned with only a few seconds left, it is a way of running out the clock without being punished

Is there a way the site can stop this new way of abandoning a game
he probably waited until the very end to resign but was present the whole time. i guess he hoped you leave the game and he would win by default or something.

i don't see how lichess could stop it tho.
lichess can't prevent you to use your allocated time and lichess can't auto-resign the guy if he is present.
There was, I think, 4.6 seconds left
I assumed he didn't wait 9 and a half minutes, I thought he used a script
But if, as you say, he was actually there and waiting, then yes, I'm not sure Lichess can stop it
I believe, this kind of leaving is recognized by the system, too, and he will not escape from his punishment, if he repeats this behaviour several times.
You could, and should, report people who do this. If they keep doing it, and people keep reporting them, they will be punished eventually.
I did report him, I don't know if doing that makes any difference
It's tricky, isn't it. You have n minutes to make a move, and people complain if you take n-m minutes. "m was too small"! But it's allowed. But it's not allowed. Well, it's allowed if you were actually thinking. How you do prove you were thinking? "Don't know sir".

Maybe the answer is just to put a warning on the user's profile that they take n-m minutes if m is too small, and only put the warning there for given values of m, or n, and depending on how often and how recently this happens?
In theory I get your point
But it happened immediately after he dropped his queen, and a day later someone abandoned after dropping his queen
A hug [huge] eval change against them coinciding with their abandoning, it is a clear relationship
I mentioned it in some thread, the people who abandon against me, it happens after they drop a piece, it never happens after they deliver a check
On easy/obvious/ridiculous cases like this the right solution is to ban right away that player. No need to wait for more offenses. It's a clear case of bad character and those idiots must be banned. Of course he can create another account, but if he keeps doing that those accounts would not last long anyway, and after having about a dozen accounts banned maybe he would stop doing that. It's easy to spot that behavior, but there has to be a button that we could press during that game to trigger a bot that would analyze the situation and ban that bullie (cause that's what they are) even before his time runs out, to give the last laugh to the bullied. No humans needed to ban that player, just a press of a button to fire a bot. That would result in hundreds of bans, and of course some banned players would say that they were innocent and 0.0001% of them would be telling the truth and would have their account restored. The key point is that if a player loses his queen and his time runs down after just a few seconds his opponent won't press that button. To press that button a player must feel bullied, like in this obvious case. And without pressing that button nothing will be triggered. That's called giving responsability to the players.
