Scandinavian "Defence" and...

@AngryNaartjie said in #1:
Amazingly, 80-90% of the games are already out of theory after the second move and I'm perfectly happy with that.

Do you actually think that NOBODY has studied the game after 1 e4-d5 2 exd Nf6? Really?

That opening has a name, it is called Modern Scandinavian, it has many known lines and you can easily find many games in any database, heck, check mine and you should easily find 500+ games.

No one at your level know the theory of it because, as you, dont like to put the work on the study and know no theory whatsoever. All of the games at move 2 are inside theory, they just dont know it. You simply dont get out of theory at move 2.
Against d4, you might want to try the KID or Grunfeld.
Against e4 you might want to try a modern system.
Against 1.c4 you might want to try e5
Hope this helps!

How about 1...Nf6?

By the way, in "The Chess Opening for You", by GM Larry Evans, 1975, he says

"The Center Counter [Scandinavian Defense] can be played with complete confidence - it has never been refuted and you need not ever learn another defense to 1. P-K4 [1. e4] throughout your entire career, unless you want to."

It is still not refuted.

Against 1.d4, Evans in this book recommended the King's Indian Defense.
Scandinavian is probably an underrated opening. You will probably lose a lot to stronger players but hopefully make up for it with more wins overall.

Are you OK now? Were you drunk when you wrote this?

Even looking at just what I wrote you will note that I indicate that 10% DON'T play random moves, hence SOME people ARE playing a bit of theory. But the point is still that MOST players DON'T play theory meaning 80-90% of the time move 2 is already out or theory. I was also clear that I'm talking about people AT MY LEVEL, sub-15000.

Was there a point to this?

Insightful. If only I hadn't basically said it already, right?

I basically chose it because I felt it may be underrated. Since I started using it I win many more than I lose, especially in Classic time controls.

Even though I'm asking about a backup opening, I doubt I will ever be strong enough to worry about the Scandi being a truly "bad" opening. I'll likely just stick with it forever and have one or two options in my pocket. :)
