@robotrock I wish to review the evidence of antiquity. Show me the theories and mathematics. I will judge it for myself. But you see, no-one can oblige because everyone just takes a side. Stop taking a side, let's actually look at the truth for once. Show me the truth.
"Show me the truth" sounds a bit too much platonician to me.
Before this topic turns once again into science vs doxa, certitudes vs absurd, let's do it.
experiment 1 :
Watch a ship on a calm go away. She will disappear at some distance, not be infinitely reduced to a point. Hence be hidden by the Earth rotundity . By the way, you wanted some basic geometry : that distance elevated to the square divided by the ship eighth gives an estimation of the earth diameter.
experiment 2 (Eratosthenes) :
Same day, same hour (or one year apart), plant two identical sticks in the ground, at two places of same latitude. Let's say 500 miles apart north south. Mesure their shadows. Were Earth to be flat, they'd be the same.
Geometry? Consider the triangles formed by the stick, the shadow and the vertice. The difference of their corresponding angles is to 360° what 500 miles is to the earth perimeter.
experiment 3 (Magellan) :
Make a round trip around the Earth. Westward, you will arrive a day earlier. Eastward, a day after.
Magellan's diary had a one day gap, but one should not trust a handwritten notebook (written before Vatican 2). By the way, Magellan died 2 years into the 3 years the first circumnavigation.
experiment 4 : time zones
How come it's day here while it's night twelve time zones away?
Go above the arctic circle, you have a 6 months day while antartic has a 6 months night. The latitude gives you the inclination of the earth on the ecliptic plan.
experiment 5 (Vivaldi) : the four seasons
How else do you explain that equatorian zones have one season? Tropical : 2 seasons?
Different inclination of the sun beams are not compatible with a flat earth. Or you have to reconsider the whole laws of optics. (Appliable to experience 1 and 2).
Or one could counter argue that the sun revolves over and under in non plane trajectory. He should then rewrite dynamics laws and/or come up with a earth mass distribution explaining that phenomenon.
experiment 6 : Coriolis force
www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnB4qMT5R_Yexperiment 7 : Polaris vs Cross of the South
Stargazing is not the same at two places of different latitudes, let alone on different hemispheres.
experiment 8 : seismology
When an earthquake happens it's felt , of course, at its epicenter and also at its antipode, waves being reflected on the lithosphere and meeting all the way down.
Were earth to be flat, antipodes would a random place.
Considering the influence of Plato on western philosophy and theology and its love for the perfect shape that is the sphere , it's funny to see that it was a known fact since antiquity, not much discussed even during the middle ages, is now attacked in the name of a book and a doctrine that owe a lot to Plato.
I'll finish with a few quotes :
E pur si muove!
Galilei Galileo
I believe only what i see.
Saint Thomas
And this is why we can affirm that earth is banana-shaped.
Sir Bedevere in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"
When you argue with a blind-minded-theological/atheist-antiscience-conspirationist, try to be nice, patient and loving, it's them who deserve it the most. Don't throw peanuts, they'll be offended by the monkey comparison ; ape-like insults only apply to blacks, not to white homo-sapiens-sapiens primates.
When you argue with a blind-minded-theological/atheist-antiscience-conspirationist, vote him out the white house.
